Utilize appropriate aseptic techniques in the preparation and performance of all clinical procedures.

Obtain/review, record, update and interpret a personal, medical, and dental history for each patient appointment.

Apply information obtained in oral pathology and periodontics in observing and examining the oral conditions of each patient.

Examine the dentition and chart findings accurately.

Apply information obtained in periodontics and DEN 124 when assessing the periodontal structures and document findings accurately.

Recognize the potential for emergency situations and respond appropriately.

Recognize conditions in which a radiographic examination is necessary.

Recognize medical and dental findings that may require further consultation and review and seek appropriate consultation.

Incorporate preventive care planning in rendering care to patients as it relates to overall dental needs, as discussed in all previous and current coursework.

Educate patients regarding their present oral health status.

Using information gathered from the patient’s oral and periodontal evaluation, educate and communicate clearly with each patient the methods of home care specific to his/her oral needs.

Position the patient, self and equipment to attain maximum visibility and accessibility for examination and treatment.

Use proper ergonomics and indirect vision while performing dental hygiene procedures.

Select appropriate instruments for each procedure according to the principles of design, function and nature of deposits.

Analyze and evaluate individual strengths and weaknesses in skill development.

Demonstrate and assess the effectiveness of instrumentation in producing a tooth surface that can maintain health.

Demonstrate and assess the ability to perform selective polishing procedures for stain and plaque removal.

Select and apply appropriate topical fluoride and/or recommend appropriate home-use fluoride products.

Provide fundamental dental hygiene services involving the selection, manipulation, and care of specific dental materials.

Maintain effectively sharpened instruments.

Recognize the need for, and implement the CCCC tobacco cessation program with selected patients.

Exhibit the use of appropriate professional communication with others including patients, faculty, staff, and peers.

Exhibit appropriate professional behavior in all clinical experiences and assigned rotations.

Identify and utilize resources to determine the most effective solution in given situation.

Self-evaluate radiographs for technique errors and anatomic landmarks, and discuss with faculty.
